Earlier this week, many news agencies ran a video of a dog lying in front of his owner. Not such a big deal? The owner was a fallen Navy SEAL, and the dog was lying next to his casket throughout his master’s funeral.
Jon Tumilson, 36, died serving his country, as many soldiers do. He was killed when the helicopter he was in crashed last month in Afghanistan.
We have almost become deaf to the news we hear daily of a soldier having lost his life while defending us.. We are , after all, in the longest war the US has ever faced with nearly 10 years in Afghanistan, and eight in Iraq.
Every so often it takes an odd occurrence to wake us from the stupor, and everyday lifestyle, we enjoy draped in comfort and convenience.
I admit having lost count of the numbers of soldiers we have lost. I admit it takes an odd occurrence such as this to get my attention.
“The greatness of a nation and it’s moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi.
Yes this picture, and video are different enough to get our attention. And yes this is something amazing, but I am going to guess the man in the casket had to be exceptionally amazing to have earned the loyalty demonstrated by this dog.
Does it really take a dog to teach us of loyalty? Sadly, and in this case, it does.
