TPEPost.com is pleased to announce that Jay Rosen is the TPEPost.com Hero of the Month for May 2013.
Rosen is a nationally acclaimed critic, writer, and professor of journalism at New York University. He is known most for his contributions to the citizen journalism movement. Citizen journalism is the idea that average citizens take an active role in collecting, reporting, and interpreting news.
“The first thing you need to do as a blogger is understand [the internet] and how it works,” Rosen said while giving advice to young bloggers, “I think a lot of people who start blogs think of themselves sort of on the op-ed page model, and they preach from their platform without linking, without listening, without insinuating themselves into a conversation, without joining a network at all and those kind of blogs usually fail.”
In 2006, Rosen launched NewAssignment.Net connecting professional journalists with everyday internet users to promote citizen journalism. The project raised thousands of dollars and helped launch three successful blogs.
Articles written by Rosen have appeared in many publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Salon.com, Harper’s Magazine, The Huffington Post and The Nation.
Rosen also operates his own web blog PressThink.org where he critiques the press and discusses new developments in the news industry. You can follow Rosen’s Twitter account @jayrosen_nyu.
