PINCKNEY, Mich. (WXYZ) – She was crowned homecoming queen at halftime but that wasn’t the highlight of the night for Pinckney High School senior Brianna Amat.

Amat is the placekicker for the school’s varsity football team and her 31-yard field goal in the third quarter proved to be the game winning points in the Pinckney Pirates’ 9-7 upset victory over Grand Blanc last Friday night.

Amat has played soccer since the age of 3.  Pinckney’s soccer coach encouraged her to try out for the football team.  She proved to have the best leg in the school.

Fast forward to the homecoming game.  Pinckney was ahead of the Bobcasts, 6-0 at halftime.  In the third quarter, a Pinckney drive stalled and Amat was called on to attempt the field goal.  She kicked it through the uprights and the Pirates held on for their first homecoming victory since 2001.

In addition to her local newspaper and Detroit television stations, Brianna’s unique story was also featured in the sports section of Tuesday’s New York Times . She told Action News the network morning news shows have also contacted her, as well as Oprah Winfrey’s assistant at the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
