Outside the Walls (OTW) is a faith based initiative of the Wilmington Leadership Foundation. OTW is bringing about change to the Wilmington area by recruiting mentors to develop one-on-one relationships with at-risk youth.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 421      STUDENTS IN NEW HANOVER COUNTY DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL IN 2008.MORE THAN 2.5      MILLION YOUTH ENTER THE JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER A YEAR.
  • THERE      ARE APPROXIMATELY 1 MILLION GANG MEMBERS IN THE U.S.
  • YOUTH      ARRESTED ARE MORE LIKELY TO ACHIEVE LESS, WORK LESS, RECEIVE LOWER WAGES,      AND FACE MORE IMPRISONMENT.

THE LIST JUST GOES ON…..

OUTSIDE THE WALLS is tired of the statistics that our stacked up against our kids.
We are tired of seeing our children drop out of school, get arrested, have their dreams broken.
We are tired of seeing our children not succeed. We want to help them. You can too.

MENTORING WORKS!

Youth with mentors are 46% less likely to get involved with drugs and alcohol, and it increases to 70% for minority children. (NOJJDP)

59% OF mentored youth improve their grades and 86% go on to higher education
(Proctor & Gamble)

80% of youth in the juvenile system do not return to the system after being mentored.
(Prison Fellowship)

Mentored Children develop better relationships….
(Rhodes, et al, 2005, Tierney and Grossman, 1995)

Mentoring not only makes a difference in a child’s life, but in YOUR LIFE. Becoming a child’s mentor gives you the chance to have fun, develop great friendships, become involved in your community, and more importantly the chance to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  If  the willingness is present, there are many ways to help and to get involved.
