WHAT:  MOLAA will host an evening of live Mexican lucha libre to honor the beginning of
Hispanic Heritage Month. Ten luchadores (fighters) will bring the high pitched excitement of the ring to the audience during several matches. There will be food and drink available for purchase, vendors selling lucha libre related merchandise and an opportunity for guests to have their photo taken with a luchador. The Museum’s galleries will be open at 8:00pm so that guests can view Katharsis, an exhibition drawn from the Photography Collection of the Fundación Televisa that is both a documentary and an artistic journey through the real and imaginary realm of lucha libre mexicana. The matches begin at 8:30pm.

Introduced into popular culture during the 1930s, lucha libre became something more than mere entertainment for Mexicans, harkening back to gladiator battles and Aztec warriors. The history of the world, its most trite archetypes and stereotypes, all the possible incarnations of good and bad, have passed through the Mexican ring. The public is not resigned to the role of
spectator; but instead, they fervently participate in the complex and boundless theatricality of lucha libre.
At once corporeal and symbolic, bloody and cathartic, the fights have served as an unquenchable source of imagination and inspired creativity that transcends the limits of the ring. From television to comics, graffiti to digital animation, journalism to film, there has been no medium of visual expression within Mexican popular culture or the fine arts of the 20th century that has not paid tribute to the mythology of lucha libre.
