Not too long ago this girl with the “roving pen” was fortunate enough to meet one of this country’s best talents; Darryl Donnell Murrill. Man, where does one start or end, when it comes to sharing this pertinent information?  When we met, neither of us knew that we both resided in the same small but beautiful town of Wilmington, NC, It was both an awakening and a blessing to attend the event he headlined to learn firsthand about both the man and his musical talents.

It was at a 2012 “Jazz Rendezvous Winter Concert Series Event” where this writer, discovered the magic of his music.  Not only that, Darryl, has the unique ability to sustain and hold tightly, audience attention while performing!

It has been said that Darryl Donnell Murrill is a saxophonist with extraordinary ability. He truly has the exceptional talents to make the saxophone sing with a unique flare rooted in Gospel and with much Jazz influence. Furthermore, Darryl’s sound can be described as a smoother, yet soulful sound, set apart by God to bring sound satisfaction.

This amazing “man of God “is a singer, producer, songwriter, who plays more than five different instruments, and is owner of Sound Productions recording studio.  Whether he is accompanied by a full band or musical tracks, Darryl tantalizes with his saxophone sound and melodic measures of syncopation, vibrato, and wide range of note selection.

Darryl endeavors to make music that enriches listeners spiritually and to present a positive music experience to allow them to enjoy themselves as well.

Winter 2012 brought an added touch of versatility and professionalism to Darryl’s repertoire in that he was so blessed to surround himself with a talented and most dynamic group of gentlemen known as “ A Step Above”.   Darryl started this all male band which is composed of percussion, bass, guitar, and keyboard.  Many of the band members play numerous instruments and sing as well.

Join Darryl and another amazing talent Cindy Hospendales with “A Step Above” on the lawn of another American Icon, the esteemed Bellamy Mansion. The Bellamy Mansion is located at 503 Market Street in the Historic District of Wilmington, North Carolina. (910) 251-3700. Special thanks to the Bellamy and to the Cape Fear Jazz Society for hosting the annual series.
