The grant will fuel the purchase of 25 propane buses and an 18,000-gallon fueling station with capacity to expand the fleet. Currently, HISD has five propane buses and expects 20 more within the next few days.
The fueling station, which will be installed at the Barnett Transportation Facility at 6800 Fairway Dr., will be complete in November.
Each propane bus saves the school district about $3,000 per year in fuel and maintenance costs, according to information from HISD. The propane-powered buses will reduce particulate matter by 99.99 percent more than the 1989 model-year diesel buses.
HISD’s fleet includes 1,000 school buses that transport 29,000 students throughout the greater Houston area, which encompasses 305 square miles.
