New Detroit has announced its Closing the Gap honorees for 2012. The organization celebrates individuals and organizations whose actions have made a positive difference in race relations in metro Detroit.

They are:

• Individual: Curtis Ivery, chancellor of Wayne County Community College District, which serves more than 70,000 students in a 550-square-mile district.

• Community Organization: InsideOut Literary Arts Project, which engages children in the pleasure and power of reading and writing.

• Corporation: Bridgewater Interiors. Located in southwest Detroit, Bridgewater provides employment opportunities for more than 1,100 people, the majority of whom are minorities.

New Detroit is a nonprofit coalition comprised of leaders from civil rights and advocacy organizations, human services, health and community organizations, business, labor, foundations, education and the news media.
